Week One in Guatemala :)

This past week we send time getting acclimated to our surroundings here in Guatemala. We did a little of sight seeing and visiting places where we will be working.

Sunday we went to an English church (Journey) that is in the school that Heather use to teach, Christian Academy of Guatemala (CAG). In the afternoon we went to Antigua to the markets.

Monday we went on at tour with Joel in Guatemala City. He told us a lot about the history of Guatemala and we started off in the cemetery. Cemeteries in Guatemala are a lot different the US as you will see in some of the pictures. We then proceed to go to the historical district of the city where we were the only white people. Guatemala has been through a lot in the past 60 years between civil war, genocides, and corruption.

This a place where hundreds of innocent Guatemalans were murder

Tuesday we went with the people from La Limeade International to discuss our options for working in the schools. We will be working Mondays in on school and Tuesdays in another. There is five classes and two sessions a day. We will be spilt in to two groups half will be teaching art and half will be teaching music with recorders :)

Wednesday we went back to Antigua to meet with the YWAM base there to see if we could partner with them in anyway. The best part about that was a girl that I did my YWAM program in California was there and I got to see her again!!!! We went to the bartering section of the market after our meeting and that was lots of fun :)

Thursday we started the morning off with a time of community worship that turned in to a time of praying for each other. It was a really good way to start off the day! In the afternoon we went to a place in the city that is built for rich people basically to be able to everything in this place with out leaving. They can live there, work there, shop there, ect... It was the saddest place I think I have ever been in. There was absolute no joy and it honestly just felt dead.

Friday was a chill day. We played soccer in the morning at CAG which let me tell you playing at  6000 feet of elevation in hard :) In the afternoon we cleaned the house and went grocery shopping where I got a chocolate covered banana :) In the evening we had time of debrief

Saturday we went to la playa(the beach)!!!!! Heather had some friends that had a private beach house close to Monte Rico! We spend the day playing in the ocean and in the pool and just getting a tan :) At night we relased sea turtles....awesome....so cool :) and got to see a beautiful sunset on the pacific ocean! And on the drive home we got to see lava flowing down the volcano!!!

  1. Oh Vicki, I loved reading that. It's so fun to read and see that you are now in some of the places we've been to, like the arch in Antigua. You've covered a lot of ground between the city, Antigua and the beach. Was our team in Antigua when you were there or did you miss them? I went to Costa Rica when I was in college to work with sea turtles, were those leather back turtles? So cute. I'm so proud of you, live it up, fill up on God's strength and love and then pour Him out. I know you will! I love how you ended with the phrase: Serving a Mighty God with You, just like dad. Love you girl! ~Robin
